As a life member of the Camberwell Hockey Club (CHC) in Victoria, Australia, Mike Craig started his career with the club in 1942 before gaining a regular spot in the A Grade team in 1948. With CHC Craig played seven A Grade seasons, playing in virtually all positions and usually finishing the season as the leading goal scorer. At state level he played at the U21 level from 1948 to 1951 where he captained the side in 1950. This was followed by ten years as a senior player for the state with Craig captaining the team for five seasons (1957, 1959–62). In 1960 he was the captain of the Australian team at the Roma Olympics where the side finished in sixth place. After his playing career Craig continued to be involved in hockey as a coach and later wrote a book about the history of the Camberwell Hockey Club.
