John Hindle attended the Rossall boarding school in Fleetwood where he was an all-round sportsman and played hockey, cricket, and squash. As a hockey player he was first associated with the Bury HC before making a name for himself with Preston HC, where he won representative honours for Lancashire, The North, the Hockey Association, England, and Great Britain. Hindle played in the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, and at Roma the Great Britain team lost to India in the semi-final before losing 2-1 to Spain in the bronze medal match.
One of Lancashire´s best post-war forwards, Hindle was used as a winger but also occasionally played as an inside-forward. He won over 50 international caps and played for Lancashire more than 100 times, winning his 100th cap in 1969 just a few weeks before captaining them to their first ever County Championship title with a win over Lincolnshire at Skegness. Hindle was playing for the Bowdon Hockey Club by then, having joined them in 1966. He was still playing for Bowdon beyond his 40th birthday and, towards the end of his career, played squash for Fulwood in the Lancashire and Cheshire Squash Rackets League.
Hindle started Brookhouse property developers, who built up a large portfolio of sites around Britain as he amassed a personal fortune of millions of pounds. Even after his death, the Hindle family was one of the richest families in Lancashire. His daughter Emma was a two-time Olympic dressage rider.
