Hockey at the 1960 Summer Olympics

Dates 26 August – 11 September 1960
Medal Events 1

Sixteen (16) teams competed in the 1960 Olympic hockey tournament. They were separated into four groups of four teams each, who played a round-robin format to determine the top two teams in each group who advanced to the quarter-finals of a knock-out round. The matches were played at the Olympic Velodrome; Stadio dei Marmi; and Stadio Tre Fontane, all in Roma.

The 16 teams were selected by the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) based on past performances. There was an Olympic Qualifying Tournament at München, Germany in 1959 with all teams who competed there selected. Kenya was added to represent Africa but no team from the Americas was chosen.

India had won the last six gold medals (1928-56) and was on a winning streak of 30 consecutive games when they met Pakistan in the final. And there the streak ended, Pakistan reversing the result of the 1956 final by winning, 1-0, to take the gold medal. Spain won the bronze medal by defeating Great Britain, 3-1.
