Biography

Colin Dale was a former Kingston Grammar School student, and later played his club hockey for the Old Kingstonians and briefly for Edgbaston. He went on to play county hockey for Middlesex and Warwickshire (during his short spell at Edgbaston), and won international honours with Wales and Great Britain.

Equally at home on the wing or in the centre-forward position, Dale won the first of four GB caps against Germany in April 1956, and later that year was a member of the Great Britain squad that finished fourth at the Melbourne Olympics. Four years later at Roma, he was again a member of the GB squad that finished fourth once more, although he never got a game.

Dale’s wife also played hockey and their son Graham played Minor Counties cricket with Huntingdonshire. Dale spent his later years living in Lincolnshire where he played cricket, hockey, and table tennis before taking up bowls in his late 70s. Dale was the fixtures secretary of the Barnack Cricket Club and also a cricket reporter for the Stamford Mercury. When he retired from International hockey Dale shared the record for the most Welsh caps (36) with Graham Dadds.
