Biography

J. K. V. Paasio was born under the name Hellsten. With a scholarship from the Association of Visual Artists, in 1926 he undertook a study trip to Germany, Italy and Vienna, and later to other countries in Scandinavia and Southern Europe. Hellsten/Paasio studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and the Academy of Graphic Arts in München. From 1888, Paasio worked as a typesetter and magazine editor in his hometown of Uusikaupunki, and from 1896 in Helsinki. After 10 years as the technical manager of a print shop in Lahti, he took over the management of the renowned print shop of the Finnish Literary Society in 1917, a position he held almost until his death.

As a graphic designer and typographer, Paasio received numerous awards, including the Honorary Award of the American Printer magazine in America in 1914 and the Honorary Award of the Finnish Cultural Fund in 1950. He was a member of the Association of Decorative Artists “Ornamo” and an honorary member of the International Museum of Modern Printing Art.

The English title “Address” for his submitted work allows various interpretations. According to the Official Report, the artwork was made of leather and paper and could be a special design of a writing case or a document, belonging to the section of applied arts.
