During the mid-1970s Saleem Nazim was part of Pakistan’s national field hockey team that won several medals at major international competitions. In 1974 Nazim won gold with Pakistan at the Asian Games in Tehran, beating arch-rivals India 2–0 in the play-off final. One year later India had their revenge at the Hockey World Cup with a 2–1 win against Pakistan in the tournament’s final. Nazim was then part of Pakistan’s squad at the 1976 Montréal Olympics where the team won bronze, beating the Netherlands 3–2 in the final round.
Domestically Nazim represented Sargodha in the National Championships before joining National Bank. He was the senior Vice-President of the bank when he eventually retired. He later became involved as a coach for the team, in addition to being on the coaching panel for the national team. Nazim was also a national selector, and held the posts of joint secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and the secretary of the Punjab Hockey Association. After being critical of the PHF he formed and ran his own hockey academy in Faisalabad.
