Following the end of apartheid in South Africa in the early 1990s Allistar Fredericks became the first non-white hockey player to represent his country in international matches. When he was 18-years-old Fredericks was noted for his playing skills and dexterity and was selected for the national team a few years later when he moved to Pretoria. He went on to play for the South African hockey team at the 1994 World Cup, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. After his playing career Fredericks worked as a coach and the performance director of the national team. He also opened his own hockey academy at a college just outside of Johannesburg.
