Gladys Davis was the British foil champion in 1923, but did not defend her title in 1924 due to a family bereavement. It was won that year by the 40-year-old Gladys Daniell, who was winning her fourth and last title, stretching back to 1911. There was consolation for Davis, however, with a silver medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics, when she finished second to Denmark’s Ellen Osiier. Later in the year, Davis won her third consecutive title at the prestigious Ostend International Tournament. Davis went on to win the British title again in 1925 and 1926. Like her sister Winifred, Davis fenced for Stempel’s School of Arms.
