Biography

Susanna Batazzi took up fencing at the age of nine with the master Ezio Triccoli. She competed mainly in foil and in 1975 won a silver medal at the Youth World Championships at Mexico City. She had already won an Italian junior title. At age 18 Batazzi competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics and helped the Italians place fifth in team foil. She won the 1979 Italian foil championships but failed to shine at the Moskva Olympics where she finished last in her first-round pool and repeated her result of 1976 in the team event. After her active career (two Olympics, four World Championships, one World Cup, one Summer Universiade and four Youth Worlds), Susanna studied in Firenze where she graduated in architecture in 1982. She lived and worked in Jesi where she started her professional career as an architect and designer. In 2015, with the assistance of Stefano Cinotti, she wrote the book In guardia! Piccolo manuale per capire la scherma.
