Biography

Antal Zirczy competed in team foil fencing for Hungary at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Zirczy studied at a military school in Timisoara, graduating in November 1918. From 1920-23 he studied at the Hungarian Royal Ludovika Akademy. He later taught at the Royal Hungarian Bocskai István College in Budapest from 1930-31. In 1933 he was a member of the Hungarian sabre team that won the European Championship. Additionally Zirczy was Hungarian individual sabre champion in 1933, which at that time was more difficult than winning the Olympic title. Besides this individual title Zirczy won 11 national team championships – seven in sabre and four in foil.
