Biography

John Dacyshyn was a star basketball player in high school and took his talents to the University of Toronto, where he played from 1955 through 1959. Following his college career, he worked in a drug store, but continued to play amateur basketball for the alumni team, the Toronto Dow Kings. This led to his selection to represent Canada at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but he delayed travelling to Japan until his mother seemingly recovered from a serious illness. Before the tournament could begin, however, his mother died and he returned to Canada for the funeral. As the cost of returning to Japan in time was too high, he was unable to play in the tournament. He also played football at the University of Toronto.
