Biography

A member of the Weston-super-Mare Swimming Club from the age of 16, Reg Webber was in the British Olympic water polo squad in 1948, but never got the chance to play in either of their two matches. Webber was a Somerset county player for more than 20 years and won over 20 England caps, captaining his country on one occasion. He went on to become a qualified coach and in 1964 was appointed baths manager at the new National Recreation Centre at Crystal Palace. He had previously been the baths supervisor at Weston-super-Mare, and deputy manager at Yeovil baths, who he also played water polo for.

Webber was awarded a gold medal by the Somerset ASA in 1962 for his services to the county. In addition to swimming and water polo, Webber was a fine golfer, a Somerset county badminton payer, and a Weston-super-Mare tennis champion. He died suddenly in his office in 1975 at the age of 53, having only recently taken up a post with the Merton local authority, London.
