Biography

Kurt Mergler won his first major international equestrian eventing medal for West Germany in 1969, when he took team bronze at the European Championships. He was selected as a substitute for his country in the tournament at the 1972 Munich Olympics, but was not used in the team’s bronze medal-winning effort. His greatest achievement came at the 1973 European Championships, when West Germany won gold, and he picked up another bronze at that tournament in 1975. In between, he also won bronze in the team event at the 1974 World Championships. Although he retired from active competition shortly thereafter, he continued training his descendants and riding into his 90s.
