Biography

Argentine footballer Juan Carlos Domínguez played for both River Plate and the national team in the 1960s. In 1964 Domínguez played in the qualification campaign for the Tokyo Olympics in the match against Peru at the Estadio Nacional in Lima. The match would be remembered for all the wrong reasons with the deaths of 328 fans, the worst disaster in football history. A pitch invasion by the home fans was met by retaliation from the police with tear gas, with the resulting panic causing a stampede and fatal crush. Domínguez then played in Argentina’s match against the hosts Japan at the Tokyo Games, scoring both goals for the South American team in their 3–2 defeat.
