Biography

Alfonso Rojo became a physical education teacher in Mexico City, where he taught basketball, football, swimming, and track and field. Rojo first had success in basketball, winning three consecutive league titles from 1924 to 1926 with Cooperación. Most of the players also represented the Mexican national team and won gold at the inaugural edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1926. Prior to the war Rojo won more national titles as a coach, as well as another gold at the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games. Two years earlier he also led the team to bronze at the Berlin Olympics.

In the late 1920s and early 1930s Rojo also coached the Mexican national football team. Prior to taking the basketball team to the Berlin Olympics, he also managed the Mexican football team at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. The team, however, only played one match in the Netherlands, losing 7–1 to Spain to be eliminated. Two years later Rojo worked as a physical trainer for the Mexican squad at the 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay.
