Biography

Centre-back Seppl Brandstetter was a member of the Austrian football team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The team won 5-1 against Germany in the first round but was eliminated in the quarter-finals 3-1 by the Netherlands. In the consolation round Austria beat Norway 1-0 and Italy 5-1 but then lost the final to Hungary 3-0.

Domestically, Brandstetter played alongside his brother Fritz until World War I, when Fritz was severely injured. Seppl played with SK Rapid Wien (Vienna) (1911-24 and 1925), Wien (Vienna)er AF (1925) and ASV Hertha Wien (Vienna) (1926). He helped Rapid win the Austrian Championship eight times in 1912-13, 1916-17, 1919-21, and 1923, and the Austrian Cup twice in 1919-20. He won 42 international caps and scored two goals.

Brandstetter turned to coaching in 1927 and worked with Wiener (Vienna) SC (1927-28), VfL Neckarau (1928-33), and Vorarlberger FC Hard (1933-34). In the last weeks of World War II, he died from pneumonia in a hospital at Wien (Vienna).
