Biography

A defender and later forward, Jan Studnicka was a member of the Austrian football team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. The team won 5-1 against Germany in the first round but was eliminated in the quarter-finals 3-1 by the Netherlands. In the consolation round Austria beat Norway 1-0 and Italy 5-1 but then lost the final to Hungary 3-0.

Domestically, Studnicka played with Wiener (Vienna) AC from 1897-1920. He helped them win the Austrian Championships in 1901-03 and 1915. In 1901, 1903, and 1904, he also won the Challenge Cup with them. He was declared world top scorer in 1902 and 1903. He also won 28 international caps and scored 18 goals.

Studnicka gave some remarkable performances, and was widely seen as the founder of the so-called “Vienna Dribbling style”. He turned to coaching after his active career and coached Wiener (Vienna) AC from 1920-22 and FC Zürich in Switzerland (1922-24). He coached the latter to the Swiss Championship in 1924. He then moved back to Austria to take over coaching at SC Rudolfshügel.

By profession, Studnicka worked as a department manager in the sporting goods department of the Westend department store, right across from the West Station.
