Biography

Paul Berth started his career playing as a halfback for Birkerød Boarding School. From 1908-12 and 1912-23 he had this position playing B.93 København and for Akademisk Boldklub in Gladsaxe, respectively. With AB he won the national championships in 1919 and 1921.

Berth made his début for the national team in a friendly against England in 1911 in London. At the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Denmark had a bye in round one and defeated Norway and the Netherlands convincingly to reach the final. Here they lost 4-2 to Great Britain (England) winning Olympic silver. Berth played in all three matches of the Danish team. He was also a member of the team at the 1920 Olympics at Antwerpen but did not play in Denmark’s only match against Spain.

He was considered one of Denmark’s greatest players in in the 1910s. Berth became the third player to reach the number of 25 international matches for Denmark and for a time held the Danish record of international matches. He played his last and 26th international match against the Netherlands in Amsterdam in 1922. He led the team as captain in 14 matches and scored one goal in a friendly against Norway in 1917.

Paul Berth was a goldsmith and took over the family business in Copenhagen after his father’s death in 1917. In 1916, he married Asta Ingrid Dragsted.
