Biography

Mimi El-Sherbini spent his entire domestic football career, from 1957 through 1971, with Al-Ahly. During that time, he won four Egyptian Premier League titles (1958, 1959, 1961, 1962) and three Egypt Cups (1958, 1961, 1966). Internationally, he was a member of the Egyptian national squad from 1958 through 1969, although for some of that time the country was known as the “United Arab Republic” due to its brief union with Syria. His greatest success came in winning the 1959 Africa Cup of Nations, and he also competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, where Egypt was eliminated in the preliminary round and the bronze medal match respectively.

After retiring from active competition, El-Sherbini took up coaching and was head of Dubai’s Al-Nasr Club from 1971 through 1975. The end of his tenure also saw him spend a brief period as coach for the national team of the United Arab Emirates. After coaching Ghazl Domiat from 1981 to 1982, he shifted focus to commentating, which he became best known for in the Arab World.
