Biography

Viljo Lietola played as a defensive midfielder for HJK in Helsinki. With HJK he won the Finnish championship in 1911 and 1912. In 1913, he became a member of the board of the club. During World War I, he played one season for Unitas Petrograd. After his return to Finland he represented Rajaveikot Kuokkala from 1920-23.

At the 1912 Olympic Games, Lietola played in three games for the Finnish team when Kaarlo Soinio was injured in the first game. Finland defeated Italy (in overtime) and Russia in the first two rounds, but had no chance against England in the semifinal and the Netherlands in the bronze medal match. In total, Lietola played five international matches.

With his wife Elsa Sofia (née Junnonen) he had one son.
