Frank Donovan was in the Welsh team that beat England 4-3 at Shrewsbury a few months before the Olympics. It was only the second time Wales had beaten England since the series started in 1908. A right-winger, he was called up for the Olympic trials and made the final squad. He played in two games and scored a sensational equaliser against Yugoslavia in the semi-final but the Europeans ran out 3-1 winners. He started his career at Milford United and Haverfordwest before joining Pembroke Borough who he skippered to promotion to the Welsh League in 1947-48. He moved to Swansea Town (now Swansea City) in May 1950 and in his one season with the Swans he played 15 Second Division games, scoring two goals. He returned to Pembroke in July 1951 and helped them to win the Welsh League for the first time in 1953-54. He later managed Pembroke and Milford United. He was an electrician at Pembroke Docks and also owned a sports shop on the town.
