Biography

Robert Hawkes was educated at Luton Higher Grade School and after playing for various local amateur sides he joined the Town club in 1901. He captained Luton Town in the 1905-06 season, played five times for England in full internationals and made 22 appearances in amateur internationals before turning professional in 1911. Hawkes continued to play at left-half for Luton until after the war, and at the end of 1919-20 season he had a few games for Bedford Town before retiring to his business as a straw-hat manufacturer. He had a frail physique and was a poor header of the ball, but adequately compensated for these deficiencies with excellent judgment and remarkably skilful footwork.
