Martin Hoffmann

Forward Martin Hoffmann was a member of the East German (GDR) football team that beat Poland 3-1 at the Montréal Olympics to become the first German team to win an Olympic gold medal. He scored the goal for 2-0 in the 14th minute. From 1973-81 he played 66 international matches with the East German national team, and also nine more with the Olympic team. He was also on the East German team that surprisingly beat West Germany 1-0 in the 1974 World Cup.

In his youth Hoffmann played with BSG Aktivist Gommern, but as an adult he only played with 1. FC Magdeburg in 256 Oberliga matches, scoring 78 goals from 1972-85. He helped them to win two national titles (1974, 1975) and three national cups (1978, 1979, 1983). His greatest moment came in 1974, when he won the European Cup Winners’ Cup against AC Milano winning 2-0. He is the only East German soccer player who won both this cup and an Olympic gold, and was also on the 1974 World Championship team.

Hoffmann later started a coaching career as a youth coach with 1. FC Magdeburg. From 1994-96 he was named chief coach of the club. He was a graduated sports teacher.
