He also reached the rank of #19 in the world in the singles in February 1988 and competed in the singles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Van Rensburg won 20 ATP doubles titles from August 1983 to June 1996 with his first victory coming at the Grand Prix Cleveland in the United States with partner Mike Myburg. Van Rensburg had the most success with American Paul Annacone with the duo winning nine titles together. Along with his success in the doubles Van Rensburg also won two ATP singles titles, the first against Jimmy Connors in March 1987, and the second coming against Paul Chamberlin in November 1989.

At the 1985 Australian Open Van Rensburg won the doubles title with Annacone once again partnering him.
