Paul Mehl came from TuRU Düsseldorf to join Fortuna 1893 Düsseldorf in 1932. His first major match was the 3-0 victory of his club in the final of the German Championship in Cologne against Schalke 04. He competed in another championship final and a cup final and continued to play for his club until 1949. In 1936 he had attracted the attention of German coach Otto Nerz in Germany’s test matches against the English club FC Everton. His first international match was the victory against Luxembourg in the 1936 Olympic tournament. He was not fielded in the second match against Norway and made his second and final appearance representing Germany later that year against Poland. In Berlin he played in the midfield, but in club matches he also held positions as a forward and defender. He ran an inn and, after World War II, a hotel in Düsseldorf.
