Biography

Tan Liong Houw’s parents did not want him to play football in his youth, but he managed to play clandestinely until he could finally convince them of his talent. Tan ended up representing Indonesia at three editions of the Asian Games: in 1954 when he was eliminated in the semifinals, in 1958 when he won a bronze medal, and in 1962 when he was eliminated in the preliminary round. He was also a reserve at the 1951 edition and took part in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic tournament. In the latter, the Indonesians held the Soviet Union to a scoreless draw in the quarterfinals, but then lost 0-4 in the replay; Tan played in both games. Domestically, he played for UMS and two of his sons were members of the national team in the 1980s.
