Bertie Kerr

Full-back Bertie Kerr played in the historic first Republic of Ireland (then the Irish Free State) international football match against Bulgaria at the Paris Olympics on 28 May 1924. He also played in the 2-1 extra-time defeat by Netherlands in the quarter-final. When they played their first home international against the USA at Dalymount Park, Dublin, on 14 June 1924 (although some sources incorrectly say 16 June), Kerr was his country’s captain. These were his only three international appearances.

Kerr started his career as a youth with Drumcondra before a move to Bohemians after World War I. He spent ten years at the “Bohs”, becoming club captain, and won the FAI League title in 1924. His younger brother Kevin went on to also captain the club some years later.

After finishing his footballing career in 1927 Kerr joined the Bohemians’ management team. He also set up his own bloodstock agency and became successful racehorse trader. Three horses that passed through his books, Freebooter, Sheila’s Cottage, and Red Alligator, went on to win the Aintree Grand National. The Bertie Kerr Memorial Maiden Auction Stakes at Phoenix Park was in Kerr’s honour.
