Biography

Leon Suzin studied in Warsaw, and submitted the design of the Stadium of Warsaw (Szczęśliwice) for the 1928 Olympics with Jadwiga Dobrzyńska and her husband Zygmunt Łoboda. From 1931-53 Suzin was a lecturer at the Warsaw University of Technology. During World War II he was taken prisoner in Germany.

After the war, Suzin was commissioned to erect a memorial for the heroes of the Warsaw ghetto. The first was unveiled in 1946, and a second in 1948. Afterwards, he played a key role in the reconstruction of Warsaw. In 1953 he was released for political reasons, but was rehabilitated in 1956. Afterwards he taught again at a state school for architecture. Suzin later published a pioneering book for diagram perspectives by architects. His son Jan (1930-2012) became a very well-known television presenter in Poland.

The Stadium in Warsaw (Szczęśliwice) was ultimately not implemented. Its design won the third prize in the tender. Originally scheduled as an Olympic stadium, it was to be built in the old fortress Szczęśliwice. The stadium would have offered 13,000 seats and standing room for 27,000, and incorporated in the plans was a train stop. After planning began in 1926, the work was stopped in 1928, and the stadium was erected elsewhere.
