Biography

Joop Boutmy joined the youth team of HBS in Den Haag in 1906 and made his début for the first team in 1910. He played as a midfielder until he injured his knee in a match in October 1914. Boutmy took a break from Football for almost two years. In 1916 he went to the Dutch East Indies where he had a comeback with the team of Langkat SV on the island of Sumatra. In 1918, he returned to the Netherlands and his former club HBS. In the following years he went to the East Indies two more times, in 1919 and 1922, interrupting his career in the Dutch league. In 1923 he returned to the Dutch West Indies for good but continued to play for Langkat SV and B.V.C. from Batavia (now Jakarta). Boutmy had represented HBS in 89 league games scoring six goals.

On international level, Boutmy won 10 caps and scored one goal for the Netherlands making his début at the 1912 Olympic Games. There, he missed the first match against Sweden but was fielded in the following three games including the 9-0 victory over Finland to win bronze. Boutmy was also successful in athletics in discus and javelin throw and became Dutch champion in the latter. He also played cricket, hockey, and - particularly successful – tennis.

In the Dutch East Indies, Boutmy workied on a plantation. Just weeks prior to the German invasion of the Netherlands he emigrated to the United States, where he became a real estate agent in New York. Eventually, he settled in Verona, New Jersey where he died in 1972. Boutmy was married to tennis player Maria Theodora “Zus” Boutmy-Wijlacker with whom he had one daughter.
