Biography

Nicknamed Het Sparta-kanon (the “Sparta cannon”, after his club), De Groot played in 9 international matches. He scored 6 goals, but is best remembered for the two he scored against England. The 2-1 defeat of the English amateur team was considered a major result for Dutch football, even if the English professional team was much stronger at the time.
