Biography

Ragnar Wicksell started his career with Mariebergs IK and changed to Djurgårdens IF from Stockholm in 1911, playing as a midfielder. He played a decisive role in Djurgårdens’ winning streak prior in the 1910s. Together with his teammate Bertil Nordenskjöld he was the first Swedish footballer to win for national championships, in 1912, 1915, 1917, and 1920. He was described as a rare combination of elegant technician and hard tackler.

At the 1912 and 1920 Games Wicksell played all matches of the Swedish team, five in total, but lost all but one (against Greece in 1920). He won 33 caps with Sweden between 1911 and 1921 and scored three goals. In nine games he captained the Swedish team, including his final international game, a scoreless draw against Denmark in 1921. In 1926, he was awarded the “Stor Grabb” badge in football.

Wicksell also represented Djurgårdens IF in bandy and won a Swedish Championship gold in 1912. He worked as a typographer in a printing firm.
