Biography

Charles January was one of the January brothers, who competed in football (soccer) at the 1904 Olympics. He was a halfback along with his older brother John. “Hicks” January also briefly played minor league baseball. He later moved to McAllen, Texas where he ran a haberdashery and served as the postmaster of McAllen throughout the 1910s and 1920s. He had a daughter, Lois January, who became a motion picture actress, appearing in, among many other films, “The Wizard of Oz.” In the 1930s she was well known for playing the female lead in many low-budget westerns. In the 1930s, Charles January moved to Los Angeles to support his daughter’s movie career and worked there as a salesman at a ladies dress shop. He later moved back to McAllen, Texas, where he worked as a real estate agent.
