Biography

Fred Zbikowski, later known as Fred Shields, played for the US football (soccer) team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He grew up in New Jersey, studying at Panzer College of Physical College, which later merged with Montclair State University. He played for various clubs around New Jersey, starting with Newark Portuguese in the State League, Independent FC in the Northern New Jersey League, Prague FC, and the Kearny Scots-Americans of the American Soccer League (ASL). Zbikowski served with Patton’s 3rd Army in World War II. He later was a high school, college and amateur soccer referee, and refereed some 1948 National Challenge Cup games. Zbikowski changed his name to Fred Shields later in life, and in 1968, was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame under that name.
