Biography

Angelika Hellmann was the daughter of Rudolf Hellmann, the long-time vice-president of the NOC of the former GDR. She was a member of the East German women’s gymnastics team from 1971-76, during which time she won team silver medals at the 1970 World Championships in Ljubljana, the 1972 Summer Olympics in München, and the 1974 World Championships in Varna. She also collected a team bronze at the 1976 Montréal Olympics.

Individually, Hellmann’s best finish in the all-round events was a bronze medal at Varna. In those four championships, she reached nine apparatus finals, with a fourth in the uneven bars at Varna in 1974 being her best finish. She reached all four apparatus finals that year.

At the European Championships, Hellmann won even more medals, a gold, along with Lyudmila Turishcheva, in the horse vault in 1973, a silver, behind Turishcheva, in the uneven bars, also in 1973, and a bronze in uneven bars in 1970. Domestically she won the all-around East German individual titles in 1973 and 1974, the uneven bars title in 1973, and the floor exercise title in 1974. After her active career, Hellmann started coaching in Berlin, and was the German national women’s team coach after re-unification, from 1990-94.
