Carmelo García began his boxing career with Nuevo Club de Schamann in Las Palmas and became an accomplished light-welterweight fighter. During his career García was the Spanish champion on ten occasions and competed at the Olympics. At the 1960 Roma Olympics he fought Marian Kasprzyk, losing to him by knock-out in the first round. Despite his brief appearance at the Olympics, he turned professional the following month, winning his début fight. García only lost one of his first 14 fights, earning him a shot at the Spanish welterweight title. He beat Andrés Navarro to win the belt in November 1962, but lost the rematch to Navarro just four months later. He bounced back from the loss to win 16 of his next 17 bouts to give him an opportunity to fight for the European welterweight title. He fought Fortunato Manca in June 1965 in Madrid but lost the contest by knock-out. García competed for a few more years before retiring in February 1968, winning 35 of his 46 bouts as a pro.
