Joseph Lestienne was serving his compulsory military service in 1900 at L’École normale militaire de gymnastique de Joinville. Lestienne later became an instructor at the children’s section of Société de Gymnastique La Roubaisienne. Originally, we had one athlete competing in both 1900 and 1908 gymnastics, named “L. Lestienne”, but further research has shown this to be two different athletes. In real, they were 2 brothers, Joseph and Louis Lestienne. Joseph was born in Berchem, or Berchem-lez-Audenarde in French, a commune fused in 1971 with 3 other communes to create the commune of Kluisbergen.

Once considered to have competed in both 1900 and 1908, research in April 2021 by Taavi Kalju has shown this to be two separate athletes, Joseph Lestienne (29979/1900) and Louis Lestienne (138443/1908). In real, they were 2 brothers, Joseph and Louis.
