Biography

Juhani Salmenkylä was an accomplished orienteer, basketball player, coach and referee. In orienteering, Salmenkylä was a seven-time winner of the annual Jukola Relay event in Finland with the Helsinki team. Salmenkylä also won two silver medals at the World Orienteering Championships, in 1966 and 1968, and a gold medal at the 1964 European Orienteering Championships.

Between 1952 and 1960, Salmenkylä played in more than 90 basketball matches for the Panthers and HOK-Veikki, before becoming the head coach of the Panthers. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Salmenkylä was the manager of the Finnish team and was also a referee in five matches during the tournament. From 1969 to 1972, Salmenkylä was the President of the Finnish Basketball Association, and in 2015, he was inducted into the Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame.
