Frithjof Sælen was a member of the Norwegian men’s gymnastics team, which won an Olympic gold medal in the all-around free system event. In 1920 in Antwerpen he claimed another silver in the men’s free system team event. He started his professional career as an office boy and then underwent business training. Sælen later worked as a clerk and as an agent and merchant. In 1917, he married Astrid Weltzin; they had two sons and a daughter. Their son Frithjof Sælen, Jr. (1917-2004) was an illustrator, author, and resistance fighter during World War II.
