Biography

Richard Bishop was born on Long Island but moved with his family to California when he was 11-years-old. He started competing in gymnastics at Polytechnic High School and Compton Junior College. He worked all through junior college but still managed to make the 1932 Olympic team, where he placed fourth in rings. Bishop eventually attended UCLA, graduating in 1936. He was later chairman of physical education at Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles for 17 years, also coaching gymnastics there, and briefly coaching football, basketball, and track. Bishop also coached gymnastics in local meets on the West Coast.
