William Merz was from St. Louis and represented the Concordia Turnverein at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics. He competed in the three individual all-around turnverein events in the July turnverein gymnastics competitions, winning a bronze medal in the field sports all-around. Merz returned to compete in October at the AAU gymnastics events, winning a bronze medal in the four-event all-around, and two bronzes and a silver in apparatus events.
