Biography

Goalie Siegfried Voigt was on the East German handball team at the 1972 München Olympics that unfortunately lost the bronze medal match, 19-16, against Romania. He was the only one from this squad to return at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, when the former GDR won the gold medal against the Soviet Union, winning the final 23-22 in overtime and giving the Germans their first Olympic title. Voigt also won a silver (1974) and a bronze medal (1978) at the World Championships. He earned 177 international caps and scored two goals.

Domestically, Voigt played with BSG Wismut Aue and later SC DHfK Leipzig. Voigt was later employed by SC DHfK Leipzig. Until German re-unification he worked as a youth coach and briefly also for the first team. After re-unification he was involved in the integration of disabled sportsmen into the club.
