Biography

Back forward Bianca Urbanke was a German handball player who was on the losing side in the third-place match at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when Germany lost 24-20 to the Unified Team EUN. Four years later at Atlanta the team placed sixth, possibly because Urbanke was only a substitute under coach Ekke Hoffmann. After reunification she won the gold medal at the 1993 World Championships and the silver medal at the Europeans the following year. Urbanke won 207 international caps and scored 775 goals.

Domestically, Urbanke played in the former GDR with ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt on Oder until 1990, winning the national title in 1986-87 and 1990. She also helped them win the IHF-Cup in 1990. After reunification, she moved to SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1990-93) then TV Lützellinden (1993-94) before returning to the renamed Frankfurter HC (1994-99 and 2001-04). In between she played with El Ferrobus Mislata in Spain, winning the EHF Cup in 2000. In 2004, she added another national title with Frankfurt.

Urbanke married handball coach Dietmar Rösicke. In 2003 and 2004, she was named Handball Player of the Year, and in 2005 she helped Thüringer HC win promotion to the German Bundesliga.
