Biography

German handball player Markus Baur won the silver medal with the German team at the 2004 Athens Olympics, after placing seventh in 1996 at Atlanta and fifth in at Sydney in 2000. He was considered one of the world’s best ever backcourt players and was Handball Player of the Year in Germany in 2000 and 2002. Internationally, Baur was world champion in 2007 and World Championship runner-up in 2003. Additionally he was European champion in 2004, European runner-up in 2002, and third in 1998. He won 228 international caps and scored 712 goals.

At club level, Baur played with SG Wallau / Massenheim (1993-97), TV Niederwürzbach (1997-98), HSG Wetzlar (1998-2001), TBV Lemgo (2001-07), and in Switzerland with Pfadi Winterthur (2007). He helped Lemgo win the German Championship in 2003, the German Cup in 2002, and the EHF Cup in 2006. He also won the German Cup with Wallau / Massenheim in 1994.

Baur turned to coaching in 2007 and won the Swiss national title in 2013 and 2014 with Kadetten Schaffhausen. His time as a coach also included spells at Pfadi Winterthur (2007), TBV Lemgo (2008-09), TuS Nettelstedt-Lübbecke (2010-12), the German Youth National Team (2012-26), and TBV Stuttgart (2016-18). Baur also worked as a TV expert with the German TV channels RTL, Sport1 and ZDF. His daughter Chiara also became a handball player, and his sons Mika and Kimi were footballers.
