Biography

Forward Jochen Fraatz, nicknamed “Scholle”, was on the West German handball squad at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics that won the silver medal after losing 18-17 in the final to Yugoslavia. Therefore, all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Eight years later at Barcelona the now re-unified German team finished tenth. Fraatz won 185 international caps and scored 809 goals.

Domestically, Fraatz played with TUSEM Essen, HSG Nordhorn and TBV Lemgo in the Bundesliga, scoring 2,660 goals in 441 matches. With TUSEM Essen he won the German Championship in 1986-87 and 1989, and won the German DHB Cup in 1988, and 1991-92 with Essen, and in 2002 with Lemgo. He also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1989 with Essen. Fratz was Bundesliga top scorer in 1991 and 1992. He later became a coach with lower league clubs.
