Biography

Károly Vass started his handball career in 1960 as a player with XV. kerületi Vasas. For 19 years, between 1963-82, he was associated with Elektromos team, and with them won the Hungarian championship three successive times 1969-71, and the Hungarian Cup three times in 1976, 1980-81. His younger brother Sándor was also on the team with him at that time. Between 1971-82, Károly played 115 times and scored 306 goals for the Hungarian national team. He participated at two Olympics, finishing eighth in 1972, and sixth four years later. At the World Championships, Vass finished seventh in 1974 and ninth in 1982. In 1974 he was the Handball Player of the Year in Hungary.

After completing his playing career at the age of 43, he worked as a coach and then as a sports manager, becoming president of Elektromos in 1989, continuing to work for them until 2002. Between 1993 and 2004, he was the vice-president of the Hungarian Handball Association, vice-president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, and president of the National Association of Sports Associations.
