Biography

Walter Gómez boxed at the 1972 Olympics, losing in an early round, and then turned professional in August 1973, winning his first pro bout by a knockout in round two over Eugenio Lazzari in Santa Rosa, Argentina. Gómez fought professionally until April 1983, when he lost a decision to Bushy Bester in Johannesburg, finishing with a career record of 45 wins (28 KOs), 8 losses, and 2 draws. In May 1980 Gómez won the South American welterweight title by a decision over Juan Carlos Peralta in Santa Rosa. He defended the title three times before losing it in October 1982 against Francisco de Jesús in São Paulo, Brazil. Gómez then became a boxing coach at the local gym in Rio Gallegos.
