Biography

Choidoryn Övgönkhüü was a Mongolian martial artist who was proficient in both judo and sambo as an athlete and a coach. In 1961 Övgönkhüü was drafted into the Army, becoming a rifleman and eventually reaching the rank of captain. He began practicing judo and sambo in 1968, earning himself a place on the Mongolian Olympic team in the former. At the 1972 München Games he competed in the middleweight class, where he was eliminated in the second round by Slavko Obadov (YUG). One year later Övgönkhüü won bronze in the 82kg class at the Sambo World Championships in Tehran. He followed his competitive career by becoming a coach, which saw him awarded with the title of Honoured Coach of Mongolia in 1992.
