Biography

Although better known as a fencer, Luis Carmona represented Chile at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in the modern pentathlon, where he was 27th individually and 7th with the national team, alongside Nilo Floody and Hernán Fuentes. He participated in the inaugural 1957 South American Fencing Championships and was second nationally in épée at the 1960 Chilean National Championships, behind Sergio Vergara. From 1961 through 1963 Carmona served as President of the Chilean Fencing Federation and helped bring the South American Fencing Championships to Viña del Mar in 1962. He was also the coach of the Chilean fencing delegation to the 1963 Pan American Games, where Vergara took silver in the individual épée and Chile won bronze in the team sabre. By career, Carmona was a captain in the army, but he later worked as a professor of physical education.
