Biography

Despite losing to Frank Meachem in the featherweight final at the 1928 ABA Championships, Welshman Fred Perry got the call-up for the Amsterdam Olympics. He justified the selectors’ decision by reaching the quarter-final, where he lost to the eventual gold medallist, Bep van Klaveren of the Netherlands.

Perry won the first of many Welsh featherweight titles in 1924 but, despite winning many of his own national titles, never appeared in another ABA final. As an 18-year-old, Perry was on the same bill as two greats of Welsh boxing, Johnny Basham and Jimmy Wilde, at a Charity Boxing Night
