Biography

Although he was 95 years old when he died, Tranquilo Capozzo was the still the latest Argentine to gain an Olympic medal. Together with Eduardo Guerrero, he won the double sculls event at the 1952 Olympics. It wasn’t until 2004 that Argentina won another Olympic gold medal, taking both the basketball and football titles at the Athens Games. Capozzo was born in the United States, and came to Argentina at age 18. He initially started out as a cyclist, but quickly fell in love with rowing. By the time of the 1952 Games, he was considered too old for the skiff event, and was offered to pair up with Guerrero. Capozzo was initially against it, feeling the much younger Guerrero to be undisciplined. He eventually gave in, and the duo turned out to be a success.
